CHAPTER THIRTEEN

JANE

When Elo left the office, the door closing woke me. I sat up on the couch and rubbed my eyes, trying to remember where I was.

When the past two weeks came rushing back to me, I blew out a frustrated breath.

Amnesia sucks.

There had to be a joke somewhere in this whole situation, a way to see it as funny, but I couldn’t find it.

I glanced around Elo’s office, my gaze landing on a pale blue sheet of ePaper on the oversized coffee table.

Our translator chips, designed by the Khanavai, did a great job of translating speech in real-time. It was not, however, quite as efficient when dealing with text. There were whole net sites devoted to funny translations between Khanavai and various human languages, I suddenly remembered.

Was my memory returning? Or was this one of those things that fell into the category of ‘implicit memory’ that Dr. Andrew Tate had mentioned?

At any rate, I suspected Elo’s note had suffered from some of the typical translation difficulty. When I stared at it long enough, it finally resolved into a blocky print that read, Get new information. I will come again.

I guessed he was telling me what he had gone to do, not ordering me to go track down new information. Even if he did mean for me to go out investigating, I didn’t plan to leave this office without him. Not if I had my way.

He’d draped a blanket over me before he left, and I snuggled down into it. The couch I stretched out on was Khanavai-sized, so it was as big as a twin bed back on Earth. As I luxuriated in the combination of privacy and comfort, I realized part of why I felt so safe.

The blanket smelled like Elo, masculine and protective—a cross between something fresh and spicy, like pine needles, and pure male.

With a happy sigh, I pulled it up around my shoulders and inhaled deeply.

He doesn’t need to know how soothing I find his scent.
